Safety When We Are Using The Internet

This week we have been learning about how to be safe when we are using the internet.
We listened to stories about Hector and his friends learning to be safe. They learned why they should not give their full name, address and phone number when using the internet and to strangers that they don’t know. We also learnt that if we see something unsuitable for children on the internet, we should go and tell an adult straight away!
Parents please listen to these stories with your child and discuss the safety messages.

In the next story, Hector and his friends go to a carnival and learn why they should not give strangers information about themselves. Click on the picture to start the movie.

We Know What To Do If We Are Lost....

Last week we learnt about the importance of knowing our name, address and phone number. We practised saying these in class with each other. We watched a video of a Police dog called Bobby. He got lost at the shopping centre. We learnt what to do if we got lost. We should
• Know our name, address and phone number.
• Stay calm.
• Go into a shop and ask the shopkeeper for help or ask someone who does not look scary.
We also learnt that our name, address and phone number is private and that we should not give it anyone that we do not trust!

How To keep Safe Around Dogs

Last week Todd and Leanna from The North Shore City Council came and talked to us about how to be safe around dogs.
We learnt that:
• We should stand like a tree if a dog comes up to us and we are scared.
• We shouldn’t stare at dogs and show our teeth.
• We should ask the dog’s owner before we pat it.
• We should pat it gently under it’s chin and not on it’s head.

The children wrote poems about being safe around dogs and drew the pictures on KidPix.

Interesting Movies about The Auckland Harbour Bridge.

This year the Harbour Bridge turned 50 years old. Look at this movie of the opening of the bridge. Can you answer these questions?
What did the toll booths look like?
Why were there toll booths?
How many lanes were there when the bridge first opened?
How many years did it take to build the bridge?

During our study on the Auckland Harbour Bridge, we learned that 'clippons' were added on later because there was so much traffic and the bridge was getting too small. We learned that there were 2 more lanes added on each side of the bridge.
Listen to this interesting movie about the clippons.

What's it like walking on a swing bridge??

We thought about what it must be like walking across these magnificent swing bridges. Look at the expressions on our faces...they will tell you how we are feeling. We had fun using our imagination. Click on an image to make it bigger.
